Feline Gallstones

If cystitis is unpleasant, bladder stones constitute authentic danger for their body and life. They are found predominantly in males, castrated or not. Some animals suffer this often that is why some people consult on how to avoid them. There exist several methods, special diets and prescriptions for food and drinks. However, unfortunately, people and animals that have bladder stones often relapse even if they follow every advice. That is why I have come to the conclusion that there is no right remedy for this.

On the other hand, this doesn’t occur with kidney diseases. A special diet is important and rewarding. Preventative treatments are still trivial; always drink fresh water, have small portions of dry food and little milk and a clean litter box. Any suspicion of bladder stones is when cats start acting as if they had cystitis. Besides, bladder stones almost always are involved with bladder inflammation. If you watch carefully, you will see that even though the effort, micturitions diminish to drops of urine and blood.  It is especially dangerous the obstruction of the urinary track because of sand grains. In those cases, urine fills the bladder and it is necessary to do something as soon as possible. If not, a few days after, a uremia is produced and it can have mortal consequences.

You can grab your cat and start inspecting it by putting it on your lap and softly feeling the stomach. Be careful since a full bladder can hurt in case of a urinary obstruction. You will be able to feel something like a firm lemon. After, you will take a look at the penis; you might have to slightly extract to be able to observe it. In case of a urinary obstruction, the top, which is normally pink, will be dark red. You might be able to see how a white yellowish material comes out. It is not pus, it’s sand grains. Some will recommend doing at that moment the delicate test of extracting it with gentle massages, but it has to be done softly if not it will be torture for your cat. I wouldn’t try it before having applied an antispasmodic and sedative. In most cases, the expulsion only is achieved submitting the animal with light anesthesia. If urine starts to flow again, the problem will have been solved for the moment. Unfortunately, susceptible cats suffer relapses.

It is possible to cure this disease with an operation consisting on the placement of the so-called plastic penis. With this, the penis is amputated along with the urinary track stretched at the top. In its place, a plastic tub is implanted elaborated with great precision that will direct the urine out without any strangulation. Naturally, cats will be sterile after this operation. If it hasn’t been castrated before, it will be in the same operation.
